Edgar Rice Burroughs' science fiction novel, A Princess of Mars, was written between July and September 28, 1911. It was Burroughs' first work, predating his most famous creation, Tarzan. Working titles for the piece included: My First Adventure on Mars, The Green Martians, Dejah Thoris, and Martian Princess.

The story was first published as a serial in "All-Story" magazine from February – July, 1912, using the title Under the Moons of Mars. A. C. McClurg published the complete work as a novel called A Princess of Mars in October, 1917. It is the first of more than 10 stories in what has become known as the Basroom series.

The Basroom series is one of three wildly popular series written by Burroughs, the others being the Pelucidar series, which began with At the Earth's Core and, of course, Tarzan of the Apes.

Many of the Basroom stories are written from the viewpoint of John Carter, a civil war soldier whose life on Earth is marked by numerous periods when he is spontaneously teleported to a distant planet he assumes is Mars.

Burroughs has packed the tale with exciting action, imaginative creatures, exotic locations, and a heroine of incomparable beauty, making A Princess of Mars a classic example of 20th century pulp fiction.

The John Carter novels are being developed into a feature film trilogy by Disney/Pixar. Pixar should be able to bring to life the many creatures and locations created by Burroughs.
