TEACHERS AND PARENTS: Differentiation between reality and fantasy is an important concept for all of us to learn. An underlying theme in the Harry Potter series is that of imagination. Without imagination, fantasy does not exist. For this reason, the Harry Potter books are an ideal vehicle for the exploration of fantasy and reality.
REALITY / FANTASY ACTIVITY:
- Create a Venn diagram which lists the similarities and differences between the real world and the fantasy world of the Harry Potter Books
- Pretend you are Hermione and you are taking the "Muggle Studies" class. Your assignment is to create a Venn diagram which lists the differences and similarities between the "Muggle" and "Magical" worlds.
- Compare and discuss the two Venn diagrams.
- Consider the following. Within the world of Harry Potter, muggles, as represented by the Dursleys, seem to lack imagination and reject the very idea of magic. Malfoy and his friends despise the muggle world and can't understand how anyone could live without magic. Ron's father, Mr. Weasely admires the muggles' inventions.
- What do you think J. K. Cowlings is trying to say about us and the world in which we live?
